Plot

John Carter, in a nutshell, is the story of a soldier who is beamed to the planet Mars and finds himself with some amazing powers. He falls in love. And he kills monsters.

Stars

Taylor Kitsch impresses as the heroic, yet haunted Carter, in his first big leading role. Lynn Carter is superb as beautiful warrior princess Dejah Thoris, and Mark Strong adds another sinister baddie to his repertoire after turns in Green Lantern and Sherlock Holmes.

Best bit

The first thing to say is this film looks incredible. Huge spaceships battle with a vast, devouring, moving city; green-skinned, four-armed warrior aliens battle huge King Kong style white gorillas; epic battles rage across desolate alien landscapes, and even though you know that all of this doesn't exist, it can't exist; you don't doubt it for a single breathless second.

Hit or miss

Blending the epic space adventure of Star Wars with the sword-swishing brutality of Lord of the Rings, John Carter will blow your mind!
